PENDLETON La Grandes defense continued to get better as the game wore on Saturday.

The result was a 46-38 win over South Kitsap at the Red Lion Holiday Classic. The Tiger girls basketball team came away with a fourth-place finish by winning the consolation title at the eight-team tournament.

It was pretty encouraging, La Grande coach Isaac Williams said. Even though weve lost three games (this season), weve been in every game. We lost those three games by a total of five points.

Williams encouragement came from seeing La Grande steadily shut down South Kitsap.

The Tigers (4-3) took a 24-23 halftime lead and then outscored South Kitsap 22-15 in the second half. La Grande held South Kitsap to single-digit scoring in the final three quarters.

Christie Weaver paced the Tigers with a game-high 18 points. Lindsey Carmichael added 10.

Even though La Grande was called for 26 fouls to South Kitsaps 16, the Tigers made 10-of-18 at the free throw line compared to South Kitsaps 5-of-13 performance.

La Grande travels to the Redmond Tournament Thursday where it will open with Century.
