The wind, rain and cold Tuesday zapped the La Grande Tigers more than it did the visiting Beaverton Beavers.

The Tigers had a tough time with the Class 4A Beavers, falling 19-4 in a non-league baseball contest at Optimist Field.

Our level of intensity wasnt there today, La Grande coach Dennis Young said. Defensively, we didnt play well, and we didnt swing our bats well.

The fifth inning was La Grandes best offensively. Trailing 7-0, Corey Royal hit a one-out single, followed by a Preston Roe single and an Aaron Thomas walk to load the bases.

Tanner Abel drove in Royal on a sacrifice fly, and Derek Fischer nailed a two-run double, pulling the Tigers within 7-3.

The final two innings werent as much fun for La Grande. Beaverton scored five runs in the sixth and seven in the seventh.

Our pitching was OK. We just committed some errors behind (our pitchers) that led to big sixth and seventh innings (for Beaverton), Young said.

I think this is still a learning experience for our guys. Were still figuring out how to win, and win consistently.

Beaverton entered the game without a win this season. But Young didnt see that Tuesday.

Theyre one of the best 0-8 ball clubs Ive seen. Theyve been struggling, but they came out ready to play, he said.

Roe led the Tigers with two hits. Fischer had two RBIs.

La Grande (2-4) hosts Franklin High School of Portland today and Thursday for single afternoon games at Optimist Field.
