JOSEPH, IMBLER WIN, PREPARE FOR WAPITI SHOWDOWN

UNION Joseph proved its dominance by overcoming a fast Union start Friday.

The visiting Eagles boys basketball team fell behind 17-8, but outscored the Bobcats the rest of the way en route to a 60-44 Wapiti League win.

The victory sets up a matchup between Joseph at Imbler today. Both teams are undefeated in the Wapiti.

Cole Lathrop scored a team-high 18 points for Joseph (13-1 overall, 4-0 league). Marcus Wells added 14 points, and Dollen Stroup had 12.

Union (5-8, 1-4) was led by Jeremy Shankels 19 points.

We came out and set the tempo of the game, Union coach Alex Steenstra said. Then Joseph changed the tempo in the second and third quarters, built a lead and we couldnt come back.

IMBLER NIPS ELGIN

ELGIN A last second shot by Imblers Colin Culbreth capped a thrilling win Friday over Elgin, 54-53.

It was risky to go for the win with 10 seconds left, Imbler coach Ken Kramer said. The games between the schools are always close.

The score seesawed back-and-forth until the final seconds in the Wapiti League contest.

Our young kids came through, Kramer said.

Brandon Campbell scored 18 points for Imbler (10-5, 5-0). Freshman Tanner McIntosh had nine points, and Culbreth finished with 12.

Elgin (8-4, 3-2) was paced by Tyler Davis 18 points. Ryan McKone had 14.

WALLOWA BREAKS STREAK

WALLOWA Wallowa broke out of its losing slump by chalking up its first Wapiti League win of the season Friday.

After dropping its first four league games, the hosting Cougars (6-8, 1-4) handed Pine-Eagle a 57-45 loss.

In the second half, we picked up the pace and started to play better. We shot 45 percent from the field, Wallowa coach Gerry McLain said.

The key was Casey Smergut, who scored all of his 15 points in the second half. Shane Byers added 15 points.

LEOPARDS WIN FIRST

COVE Cove beat Adrian 71-30 for its first win of the season Friday.

Cove (1-11, 1-4) outscored Adrian in the first quarter, 18-2. Cove pulled away in the second half with 39 points, while Adrian had 24 points.

The team is excited because its a big first win, Cove coach Todd Gorham said.

Sophomore Devan Frank had 15 rebounds, three steals, five blocks and 19 points for Cove. Chris Taylor added 16 points, and John Pfel scored 12 points.

ENTERPRISE FALLS ON ROAD

NYSSA A tough second half proved to be Enterprises undoing Friday. Enterprise was outscored 36-21 in the second half as it fell 59-40 in Wapiti League action.

We started out slow, came on and had a good second quarter and first part of the third quarter, and then we fell apart, Enterprise coach Duff Pace said.

Kyle Crawford led Enterprise (4-9, 2-3) with 12 points. Grady Rawls added nine.
