TIGERS SPLIT GAMES AGAINST VALE

Vale The La Grande Tigers escaped with a hard-fought boys basketball victory Friday against the Vale Vikings, 61-53.

Coach Aaron Mills said it was a hard place to play, but the Tigers had a good first quarter, scoring 17 points.

We played really well, Mills said. We played a smart game.

Mills said the Tigers gradually pulled away in the third quarter.

It was a really good win for us, he said.

Tyler Lester led the way for La Grande (8-9 overall, 5-1 league) with 16 points; that included four 3-pointers. Greg Schuft and Seth Pennington each scored 12 points.

Girls lose first GOL game

VALE A scoring funk in the third quarter ensured the La Grande Tigers their first Greater Oregon League loss of the girls basketball season.

Vale prevailed 42-39 in Fridays game, ending a 10-game winning streak by third-ranked La Grande.

Vale (11-3 overall, 4-2 league) outscored La Grande (12-4, 5-1) 11-2 in the third quarter.

We had opportunities. We just missed some layups, 30 percent free throw shooting, La Grande coach Isaac Williams said.

The Tigers had a slim 23-20 lead at halftime and rallied in the fourth quarter, but the bad third quarter was too much to overcome.

Lindsey Carmichael led the Tigers with 13 points, while Christie Weaver added 11 points.

Ashley Robertson led Vale with 12 points.

La Grande hosts 10th-ranked Ontario tonight. Those Tigers beat co-No. 10 Burns 48-34 Friday.
