EOU WOMEN WIN

KIRKLAND, Wash. Its a good thing the Eastern Oregon Mountaineer women shot well Saturday, or those 30 turnovers could have cost them the game.

Shooting 56 percent from the field helped Eastern stay on top of the Cascade Collegiate Conference with an 80-67 victory over Northwest.

Eastern remains the conference leader at 16-2 overall, 9-1 in league.

We got everything within our offense. We got our fast break going, Eastern coach Anji Weissenfluh said.

The turnovers, however, kept the game closer than it needed to be. Northwest shot just 27 percent from the field, but had 30 more attempts the same number of turnovers made by Eastern.

Its kind of been creeping up on us, Weissenfluh said. Were not making real good decisions, but they applied a lot of pressure and we did not handle it very well.

Eastern had just a 37-34 lead at halftime thanks to four of the five starters getting two fouls. The reserves got us through it, Weissenfluh said.

Brooke Sellards led Eastern with 24 points, while Jamie Jo Cant had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Rachelle Stockman and Julie Coffin each had 10 points.

Brooke got her offense going. She let it come to her. In that Evergreen game (Friday), she really carried us in the second half.

Katy Lockard led Northwest (5-19, 3-7) with 28 points, but no other Eagle scored more than eight points. Eastern also outrebounded Northwest 54-34.

The Mountaineers play on the road Wednesday against Albertson in Caldwell, Idaho, an important game in their quest to win the conference title. Albertson and Western Baptist are a game back in the standings.

Its big because if we win it were still in sole possession (of first), it gives us a two-game lead over Albertson, and if we lose, its a three-way tie for first.
