JUDGE SETS BAIL AT $1.5 MILLION FOR RAPE SUSPECT

OREGON CITY The La Grande man accused of kidnapping and raping a Starbucks employee in Clackamas last month was arraigned Monday on five counts.

Chester Gunter, 42, accused in the Dec. 30 incident, will face a preliminary hearing at 3 p.m. Feb. 4 in Clackamas County Circuit Court on charges of kidnapping, first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, sexual penetration and second-degree robbery.

Bail was set at $1.5 million.

Gunter is accused of taking a female employee from a Starbucks outlet at 122nd Avenue and Sunnyside Road in Clackamas about 6:30 a.m. Dec. 30, forcing the woman to leave with him, driving to an industrial area, raping her and leaving her on the side of the road.

With the assistance of six La Grande police officers, Gunter was arrested Friday by Clackamas County Sheriffs deputies in La Grande and transported to the Clackamas County jail.
