COVE Ugly or not, Coves 60-57 Old Oregon League boys basketball win Thursday over Crane was certainly welcome.

I knew we were capable of playing like that all year, Cove coach Todd Gorham said after his team blew a 10-point fourth quarter lead, then rallied from a four-point deficit with 1 minutes to play.

The win was just Coves second in 16 games, but a win today at Adrian would give the Leopards a 3-3 record over their last six games.

Hopefully well get the one tomorrow and thatll be a great way to send off our seniors and get those younger kids excited about next year, Gorham said.

Cove needed 31 points from junior guard Justin Marler and 17 more from sophomore center Devan Frank. Those two players helped the Leopards snap a five-minute scoring drought in the fourth quarter.

Cove led 49-39 with 6:36 to play, but Crane went on a 15-1 run to take a 54-50 lead with 1:42 left and Cove senior guard Jeffrey Manley had just fouled out.

Enter Frank with a jumper from near the top of the key. Marler followed with a 3-pointer, and in 50 seconds, Cove was back on top.

The kids showed great composure after we lost the lead, Gorham said. These kids have worked hard all year even though our record hasnt been like what we wanted it to be.

Cove (2-14 overall, 2-7 league) made 6-of-8 free throws in the final minute.

The Leopards led 12-10 after the first quarter and extended their lead in the second quarter. Crane outrebounded Cove in the third quarter, and Cove turned the ball over several times, but poor shooting by the Mustangs cost them.

Crane (9-10, 4-5) finally took the lead on back-to-back 3-pointers from Chance Miller, who finished with 18 points. Ryan Joyce led the Mustangs with 21 points.

Cove started its three seniors Thursday instead of its regular girls basketball lineup, but they didnt flinch at the start of one of the biggest games of the season.

They went out there and had a lead when we took them out, Cove coach Dick Royes said of Tony Whittall, Carrie Pereira and Jennifer Johnson.

The only problem was their replacements allowed the lead to slip away. The regulars eventually turned it around in the third quarter and Cove came away with a 62-50 Old Oregon League victory over Crane.

That was as tough as anybody weve played all year, the way they came at us, Royes said.

Cove (12-4, 7-2) trailed 25-23 at halftime, and Royes knew the importance of starting the third quarter strong.

We told them that whoever took the first five minutes would probably win the game, he said.

Cove scored the quarters first six points and never trailed again. Junior guard Lisa Scheele had 17 points and seven assists, most of which came in that third quarter. Junior center Kelcie Robinson scored 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked six shots.

It was a good team win. We played a lot of players, Royes said.

Crane (11-4, 6-3) got 13 points from Felicia Wright.

The win gave Cove a one-game lead over Crane for second place in the league, with one game left today for both teams. Cove visits fourth-place Adrian and Crane plays at first-place Powder Valley.
