Once the La Grande Tigers girls basketball team figured out their zone defense, they had no problems against Riverside.

After struggling in the first quarter, La Grande went on to rout the Pirates, 75-33, in the Greater Oregon League game.

La Grande (16-4 overall, 9-1 league) held Riverside to four points in the second quarter.

Our defensive intensity picked up in the second quarter, La Grande coach Issac Williams said.

In the second quarter, La Grandes offense was unstoppable. Christie Weaver sank two 3-pointers, Karli Nebeker netted three 2-pointers and Lindsey Carmichael scored nine of her 16 points in that quarter.

It was nice to make some shots, Williams said. Its been awhile.

Williams said the team was ready for Riversides zone defense and after the first quarter, his players shot the ball well.

Weaver had 20 points for La Grande, which kept a one-game lead atop the GOL standings. Vale and Ontario remained in second place after wins Friday.

Carmichael added 16 points for the Tigers, and Nebeker finished with 11.

La Grande travels today to Burns, which dropped into fourth place after a 45-42 loss to Vale. The Tigers beat Burns 61-33 on Jan. 19 in La Grande.

Boys sail by Riverside

The La Grande boys tough defense shut down Riverside 67-37 in Greater Oregon League play Friday.

Our defense was awesome tonight, coach Aaron Mills said.

Mills said the team started slow and put in new plays, forcing La Grande into bad turnovers early in the game.

However, that changed after halftime. La Grande shot 65 percent for the game, Mills said.

Kyle Bomberger had 17 points for La Grande. I think we played pretty good, he said.

Bomberger said the team has been working on its fast breaks.

We had 10 people score, which was nice, Mills said.

Greg Schuft added 13 points and Seth Pennington scored 10 for the Tigers.

La Grande play at Burns today.
