BAKER CITY Powder Valleys Riley Martin gave Jeff Lippert and the Dayville-Monument Tigers all they could handle Wednesday afternoon.

Martin scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the first half and Powder Valley went on to a 58-36 boys basketball victory at the District 4-1A Basketball Tournament at Baker High School.

He came out on fire, Powder Valley coach Blake Jones said of his 6-foot-1 senior center, who ended up with 21 points and 17 rebounds. Thats a lot of credit to his rebounding and the guards getting him the ball.

Seventh-ranked Powder Valley is one win away from a trip to the Class 1A state tournament. The Badgers advanced to play Crane at 2:45 p.m. Friday in the district semifinals. The winner goes to state and plays in Saturdays championship game, which determines seeding.

Martin went head-to-head with Dayville-Monuments 6-1 center, Jeff Lippert, and came out on top. Both players shot well Martin was 10-for-15 and Lippert was 9-for-15 but Martin had the rebounding edge, and his teammates picked up any slack.

They battled hard down there and there arent easy points when youve got a player like Lippert down there, Jones said.

Powder Valley (13-8) blew out to a 19-9 lead after the first quarter and a 29-15 lead at halftime. The third quarter proved even better, especially by senior center Justin Heffernan, who took his turn against Lippert and scored 12 points in the second half.

We just tried to do a better job of what we were doing, Jones said. Its hard to come out and play a perfect game.

Powders leading scorer, Brody Turner, finished with 15 points, while Heffernan had 14 for the game.

Lippert finished with 18 points for Dayville-Monument and Travis Moore added 15.

Powder Valley swept Crane in the Old Oregon League season, including an 82-62 victory Friday in North Powder.
