BAKER CITY Cove girls basketball coach Dick Royes used his bench early and often Wednesday, resting his starters for what will be a long week for the Leopards.

With Wednesdays 63-28 win over Burnt River at the District 4-1A Basketball Tournament, Cove advanced within one victory of a second-straight trip to the Class 1A state tournament.

It also meant a three-game week for Cove, something the team has not faced this season since the school does not play mid-week games.

Were not used to playing three games a week, said Royes, who found minutes Wednesday for all his players. Last year at district and state I noticed it took a little out of the kids. But theyre high school kids they rebound and come back quick. They bounce back fast.

The Leopards do get a day off before facing Trico League champion Spray at 1 p.m. Friday in the semifinal. The winner plays in Saturdays championship game, which determines seeding for state.

The outcome of Wednesdays game became known when sixth-ranked Cove (14-4) started the second quarter on a 19-0 run. The Bulls didnt score until the final minute and their four quick points cut Coves halftime lead to 20 points.

Even though Royes used his bench freely, the subs werent in for their offense. Coves big three of Kelcie Robinson, Lisa Scheele and Kathy Mann combined 50 points.

The bench came in and did a really good job on defense and keeping some stability, Royes said. Obviously we didnt get a whole lot of scoring out of them, but thats not necessary.

Not when Robinson scores 22 points and grabs 12 rebounds. Or when Scheele scores 18 and gets six steals. Or when Mann adds 10 points and eight rebounds.

Cove broke open a close first quarter with five quick points near the end of the period. The Leopards offense started slow in the second quarter but picked it up in the last four minutes, getting several easy baskets off steals.

By the time Burnt River finally scored again, Cove led 33-9.

Heather Lewis led Burnt River with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
