Neither Eastern Oregon nor Concordia did much in the final minute to win Fridays womens basketball game.

Yet both teams did all they could to lose it.

Concordia had to feel happy it survived with a 65-64 victory at Quinn Coliseum after a bizarre ending that included a technical foul for an excessive timeout and a blocking foul at the buzzer both calls against the Cavaliers.

Concordia dominated the Mountaineers for most of the game but shot just 42 percent from the free throw line, the largest factor in allowing Eastern back in the game.

We were in position two or three times, but it really came down to we couldnt get over that six-point hump, Eastern Oregon coach Anji Weissenfluh said.

The loss kept Eastern from clinching its first Cascade Collegiate Conference title and muddied the league standings. Eastern (19-4 overall, 12-3 league) is the only team that can take the title outright it needs a win tonight against Cascade but a loss would leave at least three teams, likely four, at 12-4.

Eastern trailed by six points with 40 seconds to play, but somehow pulled within two and had the ball with 34 seconds left.

That was when the game got strange.

Ahead 62-60, Concordia (19-9, 11-4) tried to inbound the ball from Easterns baseline, but Angela Rosales called a timeout she didnt have. The officials called the technical foul and Brooke Sellards made one of two free throws.

Eastern got the ball, and Rachelle Stockman promptly threw it away trying to get it inside to Sellards. The Mountaineers fouled Erica Peterson with 25 seconds left, and Peterson made one of two free throws to put the score at 63-61.

Sellards was called for traveling on the next possession, and Peterson made another free throw to stretch the lead to three. Eastern drove the clock down to 1.9 seconds before Julie Coffin scored on a layup. When Tricia Haddock fouled Peterson with 0.6 seconds on the clock, the game was seemingly over.

But Peterson missed the first free throw. She made the second (had she missed, the game likely would have ended there), and Danielle Diandas pass down court went to Sellards, who was bumped by Peterson at the buzzer.

With Sellards arguing vociferously for a foul and Weissenfluh pulling her back, the officials huddled and called the foul.

By herself on the court, a visibly shaken Sellards made the first free throw. The second one bounced off the back of the rim and rolled out to the right.

Her adrenaline was going 100 miles an hour, Weissenfluh said. Shes a great mental player; shell recover. Shes our leader and well go to her tomorrow night.

Concordia ruled the game from the start, taking a lead five minutes into the game and never giving it up. The Cavaliers dominated the boards with a 27-15 advantage in the first half.

Eastern did a better job in the second half, but it also had 11 second-half turnovers to Concordias one.

Sellards led all scorers with 22 points. Coffin had 14 of her 16 points in the second half, including Easterns first six of the period. Stockman added 10 points.

Korey Beeler led Concordia with 17 points.
