Enterprise, Imbler each gain 5 state wrestling tourney spots

WALLOWA Enterprise and Imbler each qualified five wrestlers for state at last weekends District 4-2A/1A Tournament.

Enterprise has four district champions: 112-pounder Jake McCleary, 152-pounder Joe Osborn, 171-pounder James Nash and 215-pounder Jimmy VanBelle.

Imblers Seth Mendel goes to state as the 119-pound champion.

Imbler had two district second-place finishes, 135-pounder John Bartell; 189-pounder Eric Johnson; and two third place finishes, 145-pounder Daniel Johnson; 160-pounder Zach Meyer.

The final state spot for Imbler went to 125-pounder Austin Himes, who finished second.

Joseph and Elgin are sending three to state.

Joseph sends 125-pounder Pat Lynn and 215-pounder Joel Lewis. Elgin will send 135-pound champion Brian Sanders, 145-pounder Codi Burgess and 189-pound champion Blake Ekstein.

Enterprise coach Chris Wolfe said everyone knows the importance of winning at districts.

Theres a lot riding on every match, if you lose youre done, Wolfe said.

Osborn placed second at state last year and McCleary was second in the 103-pound division.

We did really well, Imbler coach Steve Anthony said. I cant ask the kids to wrestle any better than they did.

Johnson placed fourth at state last year.

Nyssa won the tournament and sends 14 wrestlers to states. Enterprise finished third, Joseph fourth, Imbler fifth and Elgin sixth. The state tournament is in Portland Saturday.
