The 2002 Wapiti League District 8-2A Tournament girls championship will be remembered for a very long time.

For the first time in six years, Enterprise is not the district champion.

Imbler (20-6) toppled Enterprise (19-5) in a 72-67 triple-overtime thriller.

I thought both teams played excellent, Imbler coach Dale Wagner said.

I thought they (Enterprise) played their hearts out, Enterprise coach Mike Crawford said.

Liz Woody converted a three-point play with 3:43 remaining in the third overtime that would finally put Imbler ahead to stay 59-56.

I think it was a game of endurance, Woody said. We lasted a little longer.

Enterprise did not go down without a fight. Ashley Anderson scored a two-pointer at the 3:30 mark.

Woody scored two more points with 3:20 in the game. Kazzie Dawson swished two free throws for Enterprise with three minutes to play. Tiffany Rasmussen answered with two points with 2:49 to go. Imbler still led 63-60.

They (Enterprise) gave it everything they had, Crawford said.

Enterprise was unable to cut into the lead again and began fouling with 1:19 left. Imbler hit 7 of 10 free throws to prevent another overtime.

We just wanted it so bad, Amy Clerget said.

For the past two years, Imbler had the No. 1 seed going into the district tournament only to lose to Enterprise each time in the championship.

Enterprise beat Imbler twice this season. Imbler entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed.

Imbler missed its opportunities to win the game earlier.

Meaghan Campbell missed a shot with 10 seconds left in regulation. Emily Correll missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw with three seconds left in the first overtime. Rasmussen hit the front of the rim with 33 seconds left in the second overtime.

Rasmussen said the win involved grit, determination and teamwork.

Any time we execute our game plan with the precision we played tonight, we have to be optimistic about our success, Wagner said.

Imblers plan was to relax, play tough defense and score.

An indication of Imblers tough defense came on the boards. Imbler outrebounded Enterprise 42-39.

Nobody is going to believe that, Wagner said.

Rasmussen led Imbler with 26 points, including two 3-pointers.

Anderson made 12 of 15 shots from the field and 4 of 5 from the free throw line for 28 points. She had 16 rebounds.

Imbler plays Knappa at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the state tournament at Pendleton High School. Enterprise will face Amity at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the state tournament at the Pendleton Convention Center.
