If spring is almost here, can the Union County Fair be far behind?

Work already is well under way for the fair, set for July 31 to Aug. 3.

This years fair will have the theme, A Fair in Time, suggested by Cindy Foster of La Grande.

The fair board is accepting ideas for the fair premium book cover. Entries are due by April 1, and the winning artist will earn a $30 prize as well as having his or her cover reproduced thousands of times.

Entries can be sent to the Union County Fair, P.O. Box 298, La Grande 97850.

The fair brought home two special awards from the Oregon Fairs Association meeting that was conducted in January. Burr Courtright of La Grande earned recognition as the 2001 Local Fair Supporter, while the New Generation 4-H Club received the award for the best youth project. The club put together a petting zoo for the fair.

This years fair board is chaired by Ron Dake. Harold McKinnis is vice president. Christine Courtright again will be the fair manager with Julie Pfel serving as fair secretary.
