ELGIN Elgin baseball coach Gordy Simons needs another pitcher, and he may have found one in Codi Burgess.

In relief Friday against Weston-McEwen, Burgess got tagged for the loss, a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Weston-McEwen TigerScots, but he showed his potential in getting out of a jam in the sixth inning.

Were just looking for a second-game pitcher for league, Simons said afterward. Pitcher Skyler Payne injured his ankle and is out indefinitely.

That leaves Tyler Davis as Elgins primary pitcher, and Davis pitched a solid five innings Friday before switching with Burgess, who started at shortstop.

Davis even put the Huskies (0-2) on the board with his bat, hitting a leadoff home run in the third inning.

Tyler did a good job, Simons said.

Burgess took the mound in the sixth and promptly walked a batter and hit the next. He got the next three batters out, however.

In the seventh, a two-run double by Weston-McEwens Tyler Jorgenson was followed by a two-run home run by David Duncan.

The TigerScots (1-3) tied the game in the fourth on a single by Cory Williams that drove in Jorgenson.

Elgins Ricky Foster went 3-for-3 at the plate, with Davis going 2-for-3.

The Huskies next play April 2 against Mac-His junior varsity in Milton-Freewater.
