MOUNTAINEERS EARN SPLIT IN HAWAII

March 26, 2002 11:00 pm

LAIE, Hawaii The Eastern Oregon Mountaineers softball team lost its first game Monday against the BYU-Hawaii Seasiders but came back strong in the second game.

The Seasiders rallied for a 4-3 victory in extra innings. Eastern (4-6) followed the loss with an 8-0 win.

The first game did not seem close early on as the Mountaineers got three runs in the fifth inning to go up 3-1.

Crissie Bacon doubled to left, batting in Tonilynn Reardon for the first run and Majalise Watson advanced to third. Katelyn Tatum singled up the middle sending home Bacon and Watson.

The Seasiders did not fold and Eastern kept the door open for them.

We didnt take care of business when we were up by two runs, Mountaineer coach Anji Weissenfluh said. We let them get back in the game. We let down.

The Seasiders scored a run in the sixth and another in the seventh.

Weissenfluh substituted the stronger-armed Adrienne Fullmer for Majalise Watson in left field in the bottom of the seventh, and she made a great play.

Adrienne had some outstanding defensive plays, Weissenfluh said.

With the bases loaded and one out, Fullmer made a diving catch to throw the runner out at second.

Great play, Weissenfluh said.

Katie Martin came on to pitch in the eighth for Christina Pevey. She walked a batter and then was called for an illegal pitch.

The runner moved to third and scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

In the second game, Eastern batted well, exploding for seven runs in the third inning.

We hit the ball with runners in scoring position, Weissenfluh said. We hit the heck out of the ball.

Jeanette Riding was 3-for-3 with one RBI, and Crissie Bacon was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

Weissenfluh said it was nice to see the team string together hits in the second game.

We have the ability to hit, she said. We have to string the hits together.

Weissenfluh also reflected on the teams progress.

We are getting better, she said. We are learning from our mistakes. We have to be patient. Eventually, things will be coming together, I think.
