The Dowdys are in Rick Seversons Kenpo school. Jessica started martial arts three years ago, while T.J. began two years ago.

The Dowdys were among 200 participants competing in forms, weapons and fighting Saturday in the eighth-annual event.

Jessica competed in the forms 13-16 advanced division. T.J. was in the fighting 7-8 beginner division.

Jessica and T.J. have similar reasons for getting involved in the martial arts.

Because I kinda like fighting and getting belts, 16-year-old Jessica said.

Fighting, was 7-year-old T.J.s short response.

Jessica said she likes fighting once she gets to the tournament and could not wait to begin on Saturday.

Mostly just nervous, she said. Kinda excited.

Jessica said the most exciting tournament was her first one.

Jessica has a blue belt, and T.J. has an orange belt. The Dowdys live in La Grande.

Results of the event will be available later this week.
