WALLA WALLA A pair of home runs and strong relief pitching kept La Grande in the game, then a two-run double by Tanner Mellinger put the Tigers on top in a 10-6 non-league baseball victory Tuesday over DeSales.

Mellingers hit gave La Grande an 8-6 lead in the fourth inning.

Kenny Haggerty relieved starter Alex Arritola in the third inning and pitched shutout ball the rest of the way.

He threw five innings of one-hit, no-runs baseball, La Grande coach Dennis Young said. He had six strikeouts during that time.

Arritola gave up five runs in the second inning.

Alex started off and threw well that first inning, but he just wasnt comfortable today, Young said. It was one of those days when he didnt have the good stuff.

Zack Glassers two-run home run in the first inning gave the Tigers the early lead.

After DeSales took the lead in the second inning, Rob Searles hit a two-run homer in the third, cutting the deficit to 6-5.

In the fourth inning, Glassers single drove in Aaron Thomas to tie the game. Mellinger then doubled to right center field to drive in Jason Smith and Glasser.

La Grande (5-5) added insurance runs in the sixth when Jeremy George hit a two-out, two-run double to left field.

That really put some distance between us, Young said.

Young said his players didnt hang their heads after DeSales big second inning. They just responded in the next inning. All of them were ready to play and just executed really well today.

La Grande returns to Greater Oregon League action with a doubleheader Friday against Riverside.

We need to win our league games now, and I think the kids realize that, Young said. Were looking forward to gearing up for our league again.
