ONTARIO — An important win by singles player John Woodfield and a sweep in the two doubles matches carried the La Grande Tigers boys tennis players to a 3-2 victory Tuesday over Ontario.

Woodfield needed three sets to beat Josh Christensen, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, for La Grande's only win in singles action.

"(In) Woodfield's last match he had to finish in the rain. We actually lucked out getting it in," La Grande coach Mike Schireman said. "That was really a good win for John. The guy he played was off of a doubles team that went to state last year. I feel like (John is) really developing lately."

The win over Ontario was rare for La Grande.

"It's been awhile since they've beaten Ontario," Schireman said, "probably the first time in three years."

The Ontario girls swept La Grande, winning 5-0 and not dropping a set.

"Ontario, from what I've seen so far, and I haven't seen Madras or Burns, but I would say they're the team to beat," Schireman said.

La Grande plays two more matches on the road this week, going to Baker on Thursday and Burns on Saturday. The Tigers' next home matches will be April 25 against Ontario.
