UNION — Strong defense is helping the Union Bobcats stay on top in the Eastern Oregon League.

The Bobcats made just one error in two wins Saturday over Nyssa, with both victories coming in the late innings.

"There were a few mistakes, but we're not letting them turn into big innings," Union coach Steve Robertson said.

Union won the first game 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Four runs in the sixth inning gave the Bobcats a 6-2 victory in the second game.

Kallin Prince's triple scored Lena Weitlauf to win the first game. Weitlauf had reached base on an error.

Weitlauf, in fact, scored all three of Union's runs. She led off the first inning with a double and scored on Colbi Robertson's grounder. In the third inning she scored on a grounder by Prince.

Nyssa tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh.

Union took advantage of Nyssa errors to score its four runs in the sixth inning of the second game.

A single by Robertson scored Weitlauf for a 3-2 lead. Robertson scored on an error, then Prince scored on another error. Mallory Wike's single scored Rosa Goodman for the fourth run.

"We put the pressure on them," coach Robertson said. "We started running and getting aggressive, sort of like they've done to us the last two years."

Union hosts Elgin for a league doubleheader Thursday.
