A La Grande man accused of robbing a Clackamas Starbucks store, kidnapping a female employee and raping her, remains in the Clackamas County jail awaiting a July 8 court date.

Chester L. Gunter, 42, was arrested in La Grande Jan. 25 and charged in conjunction with the Dec. 30 incident at the store at 122nd Avenue and Sunnyside Road.

Detectives came to La Grande in late January, in part because of tips received as a result of an ad run in The Oregonian that included a sketch of the suspect.

The detectives, with the cooperation of local police, searched Gunter's person, his home in La Grande and his pickup truck. He was taken into custody at the La Grande police station, then transported to the Clackamas County jail in Oregon City, where he has remained since.

Christine Sanders of the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office is prosecuting the case.

Gunter was arraigned on charges of first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, unlawful sexual penetration, first-degree kidnapping and two counts of second-degree robbery.
