In a backyard corral on 16th Street in La Grande, Amanda Winkle, right, works with her mother, Faye Winkle, on the finer points of riding a 5-year-old quarterhorse named "Siouxz.'' Amanda, who is a certified riding instructor with the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association, hopes to start a therapeutic riding program in La Grande for children with disabilities. To help broaden her skills, Amanda plans to participate in the physical therapy program at Eastern Oregon University. She is currently employed at the ESD, where she works with special needs children.
