It was somewhat of a disappointing day for the La Grande boys tennis team at the District 4-3A/2A/1A tournament Friday in La Grande.

"Well, you know, we had a couple of disappointments," La Grande coach Mike Schireman said.

La Grande's top singles player, Levi Morrison, fell in the quarterfinals to L.Rembold from Baker, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 3-6.

"Levi played pretty well, he just had difficulty getting his serve in," Schireman said.

Schireman said Rembold returned a lot of Morrison's shots that he thought were winners.

The No. 2 doubles team of Matt Nightingale and Seth Pennington lost in the second round to Kennington and Nelson from Ontario.

"Nightingale and Pennington didn't play as well as they have all season," Schireman said. "They just didn't have a good day."

The biggest surprise was John Woodfield, he said.

"He drew the No. 2 seed and after losing the first set 2-6, I thought, ‘Oh boy, it's probably over.' But John came back and came back strong. He's just so mentally tough. He played really well."

Woodfield beat J.Rembold of Baker 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals to reach the semis, which are today in Baker City. Semifinalists qualify for next week's state tournament in Corvallis.

Aaron Nebeker played well, Schireman said.

"Probably, I felt like Aaron Nebeker played very solid for a first-year player. He made No. 3 seed."

In doubles action, Greg Schuft and Tyler Lester qualified for state by reaching today's semifinals.

Youngblood qualifies for semifinals, state

BAKER CITY — La Grande's Beth Youngblood surprised many at the District 4-3A/2A/1A tennis tournament Friday.

Youngblood, the No. 7 seed, shocked the No. 2 seed, Burns' Chelsea Ross, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.

"That was absolutely a huge upset," La Grande assistant coach Larry Morrison said.

Youngblood had five hours of sleep after she was at the state band championships. Tired as she was, she played solid tennis, Morrison said.

Youngblood was the only La Grande player to win in the quarterfinals and advance to next week's state tournament in Corvallis.

Karli Nebeker and Shalece Hibbert advanced to the doubles quarterfinals but lost to Struck and Carroll, No. 4 seeds from Madras, 6-4, 6-3.

La Grande's Haley Hines lost in the quarterfinals to the No. 5 seed from Baker, Ho, 6-1, 7-5.

"Everyone just played really well," Morrison said.

The finals continue today at Baker.
