Nyssa wrapped up the top berth at the District 2A/1A Tournament after blowing by Joseph for an 8-0 Wapiti League playoff win.

Joseph and Nyssa had identical 9-1 league records, forcing the playoff.

Joseph is now No. 2 and will wait for the outcome of the Elgin-Union playoff today to find out its district opponent.

The swirling wind and dust made it difficult for both teams.

"Both teams had to battle the wind," Joseph coach Dave Schmidt said. "They outplayed us."

Joseph played uncharacteristically the whole game.

"We committed more errors than normal," Schmidt said. "We didn't hit the ball. We didn't hussle."

Schmidt said Nyssa made the plays when they needed to and hit the ball.

After giving up one run in the first, Joseph ran into problems in the top of the second inning.

With the bases already loaded and two outs, pitcher Dollen Stroup walked two Nyssa batters in a row to force in two runs.

Another Nyssa run was scored off a single in that inning for a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Joseph began a short-lived rally with two outs.

Nyssa gave up back-to-back walks to Tyler Nall and Willie Borgerding.

Pat Lynn stepped to the plate and before he could get some offense going, Nall was thrown out attempting to steal third.

In the top of the third, Nall came in to relieve Stroup after Stroup left with runners at the corners.

But Nall gave up a single and a Joseph error gave Nyssa two more runs for a 6-0 lead.

Jeremy Dalton was 2-for-2, with a walk to lead Joseph. Pat Lynn was 2-for-3. Stroup picked up the loss.

The district tournament is Saturday at Eastern Oregon University.
