District Attorney Russ West easily won election over two opponents in Tuesday's primary election in the race for District 10 circuit court judge.

West swept both Union and Wallowa County ballots, totaling 5,143 to 2,846 for Bruce Anderson. Kippy Roberson had a total of 1,595 votes in the two counties.

West was elected judge outright by capturing more than 50 percent of the vote. Anderson and Roberson are attorneys in private practice in La Grande.

West captured 3,615 votes in Union County and 1,528 in Wallowa County. Anderson garnered 2,157 votes in Union County and 689 in Wallowa.

West will replace Judge Eric Valentine, who will retire in January from Position 2 in the 10th District, which serves Union and Wallowa counties. Judge Phil Mendiguren was unopposed for Position 1.

"I feel good," West said this morning, noting that he met many people going door-to-door in the past five days as he encouraged voters to cast ballots. "I want to thank my supporters and staff and the working men and women of the county."

A new district attorney will be appointed by the governor to fill out the remaining two years of West's term.

As for West this morning, "life is good," he said.
