WALLOWA LAKE A warm wind melted the last of the ice Monday and Wallowa Lake is ready for boating.

The boat launch docks are in place and the parking lot at the north end is being expanded to provide more than twice as many spaces for vehicles and boat

trailers.

Thanks to grants from the Oregon State Marine Board and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and $5,400 from Wallowa County, $144,000 is being invested in the parking lot.

Rogers Asphalt Paving Co. of La Grande is required to have the project completed by June 30, but the target date is Memorial Day weekend.

Wallowa County Board of Commissioners Chairman Mike Hayward said another improvement will be the construction of a barrier to prevent vehicles from blocking the boat ramp.

At the south end of the lake, the newly remodeled and expanded general store is open. The marina and the tramway are both expected to open by the second weekend of May.
