ELGIN — The Saturday family day for the Elgin Stampede Rodeo was a hit — for the most part.

"They asked the crowd if they liked having it on Saturday and nobody answered," said Terri Shaffer, family day organizer.

The Stampede's family day is usually held on the Thursday night during the week of the rodeo. But organizers experimented this year with the Saturday on the weekend before.

Typically, Shaffer said, she receives a maximum 25 entries in the 17 events, or 425 entries. This year, however, she had 281 entries, down from years past.

Still, Saturday was a hit for those who participated.

"Saturday was experimental. I would love for them to keep it on a Saturday weekend," Shaffer said. "It makes it easier on the parents, it makes it easier on the kids, it makes it easier on everybody."

Having it over the Fourth of July weekend may have hurt matters. Haines hosts a family rodeo over the weekend, as does Vale. Both likely drew contestants who would have otherwise come to Elgin.

Winners at Elgin walked away with buckles, although not all the money winners (top three) went home with their checks. Shaffer said several checks were not picked up, and winners (listed below) should call Sharma Smith at 962-1036 to arrange to pick up their check, or contact her at this weekend's Stampede.
