COVE — Both the boys and girls South basketball teams lost to the North teams Saturday evening in the Rising Star Summer Classic.

The girls North team beat the South 61-51, and the boys North won 96-85.

The girls game was close in the first half. The South was down 37-31 at the half. The North pulled away in the second half because of its pressure and foul trouble hurting the South.

Jana Brotherton of Union fouled out shortly after Laura Gyllenburg of Baker hit a pull-up three-pointer to bring the South to 37-35 deficit with a little less than 18 minutes to go.

Brotherton finished the evening with four offensive rebounds, eight defensive rebounds, two blocked shots and two points.

The South had a whopping 49-25 rebounding advantage over the North. In Friday's 57-46 loss, the South also outrebounded the North.

"They were a terrific rebounding team," girls North coach Gene Heliker said.

Kelcie Robinson of Cove had 11 rebounds to go along with her 13 points.

Robinson's basket off a feed from Amanda Wilson of Wallowa got the South within two again 41-39 with 12:26 left.

It would be the closest the South would get to catching the North.

Robinson was named MVP of the tournament. In Saturday's game, Robinson collected three offensive rebounds, eight defensive rebounds, four blocks and four steals.

"Too bad, we had to lose twice," she said after Saturday's game.

We did the same thing Friday, and tonight's score was a "little closer," she said.

The North's lead swelled to 51-41 after Cody Stroud of Sherman County sank two free throws with 7:51 remaining.

Heliker said guards Chelsea Pahl of Pendleton and Kayla Johnson of Weston McEwen were running the offense well.

"I felt tonight the guards were quicker on foot speed," he said.

Heliker said Pahl controls the team and knows when to push the tempo.

"Pretty much the coach on the floor," he said of Pahl.

Heliker said Johnson is a "push penetrator, dish type player."

Both girls were selected to the All-Star tournament team.

Pahl had six steals to go along with one assist and 16 points. Johnson had five steals and five points.

Britney McNab scored 16 points for the North.

Tiffany Rasmussen of Imbler and Robinson received three-year player awards.

Pahl was also named defensive player of the game.

Rasmussen and Britney McNab were also named to the All-Star tournament team.

Two different halves

"In the first half, we couldn't get anything to fall," boys South coach Aaron Mills said.

The South trailed 52-35 at the half. In the second half, the South got as close as 10 points.

Five of the eight South players were underclassman and a couple players were missing.

"It was fine," Mills said. "I think the kids did as well under the circumstances."

Tirell Hiatt of Vale scored 21 points. Hiatt drained five three-pointers and was selected to the All-Star tournament team.

Wade Douglas of Ontario led all scorers with 25 points. Douglas was named MVP.

Marcus Buckley of Pendleton led the North with 20 points. Buckley was selected an All-Star. Chuy Elgue'zabal of Heppner was defensive player. Chris Wyland of Umatilla and John Barnett of Hermiston were on the All-Star team.

The Rising Star Classic features the top high school players from Eastern Oregon.
