ISLAND CITY Hermiston made it a long day for La Grandes softball team Monday.

The Tigers, playing without five varsity players, fell to Hermiston 4-0, 10-0 in a non-league doubleheader. The second game lasted six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

(Hermiston) played pretty tough, but I think if we had everyone there and I pitched my starters it would have been different, La Grande coach Nicole Christian said.

La Grande (7-5) was missing starters Maria Carmichael, Ann Marie Ely and Erin Maier, who were on a school function. Christian chose not to start her two main pitchers Bre McCoy and Megan Caldwell.

Hermistons pitchers held the Tigers to two hits in 13 innings both coming in the second game.

Amanda Marcum held the visiting Bulldogs scoreless in the opening three innings of the first game and had four strikeouts. Hermiston scored two runs in the top of the fourth and added one in the sixth and seventh innings.

She did a great job pitching, Christian said.

The second game was all Hermiston, which broke the game open with five runs in the second inning and added three in the top of the sixth, along with one run in the first and fourth innings.

It didnt help that the Tigers committed five errors in each contest.

We didnt have any communication, Christian said.

La Grande, ranked fifth in Tuesdays Class 3A coaches poll, will try to stay atop the Greater Oregon League this week when it travels to Ontario for a league doubleheader Thursday. The Tigers host Riverside Saturday for two league games.

Our team just has to recover from what happened. Well see how we handle today when we play Thursday and Saturday, Christian said.
