JOSEPH Josephs quest for its first Wapiti League baseball title took a big hit Thursday.

The Eagles fell to visiting Nyssa 6-4, 18-0 in a remake doubleheader.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the first game, Joseph allowed six runs in the final five innings, including a four-run third inning.

We were right with them the entire way, Joseph coach Dave Schmidt said.

The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to close within 6-4, but were unable to do anything in the final two innings.

Jimmie Baynes led the Joseph (11-6, 3-3 league) offense with two hits, including a double and two RBIs while pitching all seven innings. Rohs Kuppinger and Ryan Barstad added two hits each. Chris Garrett had a triple.

Nyssas Jake Holcomb set the tone in the second game by hitting a grand slam, helping the Bulldogs (15-4, 6-0) to a 5-0 first-inning lead.

We kind of gave up after that first game, Schmidt said.

Joseph was held to three hits in the second game, which lasted five innings and ended via the 10-run mercy rule.

The schedule wont be any easier for the Eagles as they play six games in the next four days.

Saturday, Joseph hosts Long Creek in a league doubleheader. On Monday, Joseph travels to Riverside for a non-league doubleheader, followed by Tuesdays league dobleheader remake when it hosts Union.

The Eagles canceled their originally scheduled game with the McLoughlin JV Tuesday in lieu of the Union remake.

Were running into a bind with our pitching and having only nine players (on the team), Schmidt said. Its going to be a tough schedule.
