HERMISTON — The La Grande basketball boys started slowly against Hermiston and never recovered, falling 58-40 in a non-league game Tuesday.

"We're starting games really slowly," La Grande coach Aaron Mills said. "We need to figure it out."

La Grande scored just five points in the first quarter. Hermiston led 41-24 after the third.

Mills said Seth Pennington, who is coming back from an injury, was a difference for the six or eight minutes he played.

"You definitely need a person to be the focal point," he said. "Seth is that guy for us."

Tyler Tucker scored 13 points to lead La Grande.

Mark Carillo had 15 for Hermiston, while Tyler Murray scored 13 and Mike Haberstich 12.

La Grande heads to the Pendleton Invitational Thursday.
