BAKER CITY — The Cove girls, battling colds and the flu, took care of business against Huntington Wednesday in the first round of District 4-1A playoffs held at Baker High School.

Cove gave up just 12 points in three quarters and won 65-28. Four Cove girls scored in double figures, with Lisa Scheele and Kathy Mann each pouring in 18. Kelcie Robinson scored 11 with seven rebounds, while Cassie Mills scored 10.

Cove coach Dick Royes said he had to shuttle girls in and out of the lineup in the first half because he had four kids playing sick. At the end of the half, Cove was ahead only 22-10.

Royes said he told his starters at the beginning of the second half to give him four or five hard minutes, regardless of how they felt. They responded with a 27-2 third quarter that blew the game wide open.

"I take my hat off to all the girls who played sick," said Royes. "I thought our defense was outstanding."

He said Mills played great off the bench. "She maybe had the best game of her career," he said.

Cove (16-4) now plays Old Oregon League foe Powder Valley (17-5) in the second round of district. Powder Valley beat Burnt River 62-34 in its opening round game.

The Cove-Powder Valley game will be held at 2:45 p.m. Friday.

Cove has beaten Powder Valley twice this season. The Leopards won 47-36 on Jan. 17 and 45-42 on Feb. 8.
