NYSSA — Records were broken left and right and nearly two dozen 2A track athletes from Wallowa and Union counties qualified to go to state with their performances at the Wapiti District Track Meet Friday at Nyssa.

Enterprise made a strong showing with both its boys and girls teams, with the boys coming in second and the girls fourth.

The state 2A meet will be held at Western Oregon University May 23 and 24.

Imbler's Tiffany Rasmussen and Joseph's Licia Miller were the big individual winners.

Rasmussen was a four-time winner, taking first in the discus, the javelin, the shot put and the 100-meter hurdles.

Miller likewise had a spectacular meet. She won the 100-meter dash, and won the 200-meter in 26.45 seconds, beating her best time this season by a huge margin — .75 of a second. That is also the best 1A/2A time in the state.

Miller also ran on the Joseph's first-place 4 x 400 relay team. The Eagle sprinters put together an amazing race.

The Joseph quartet of Miller, Tiffany Zimmer, Denae Micka and Julie Butterfield already had the best 1A/2A time in the state at 4:17.54, but Imbler's team of Hannah Hall, Liz Woody, Rachel Lowe and Amy Clerget had been right on Joseph's heels all season.

The Imbler girls ran a great race, putting in a time of 4:14.73. That would have been a new best 1A/2A time in the state, except the Joseph girls ran a 4:13.33, beating their own record by four full seconds.

Imbler coach Nancy White said the race was "phenomenal" and "exciting."

For good measure, Miller also finished second in the pole vault, qualifying for the state meet.

Enterprise's Maya Waldron won the high jump, while Liz Woody set a meet record, winning the 1,500-meter run in 5:07.60. Union's Ashley Sharratt also qualified for state in the 1,500 by coming in second.

Krista Stangel of Enterprise won the 3,000-meter run with a meet record time of 11:34.74. Union's Shannon Mitchell qualified for state in the 3,000 by finishing second at 11:37.11.

Clerget won her specialty, the 300-meter hurdles, with a time of 47.60, the best time in the state this year at the 1A/2A level. Clerget also qualified for state in the 400-meter run by finishing second.

Woody won the 800-meter run with a meet record time of 2:25.06.

Among the boys, Enterprise's Swart boys had a great day.

Tony Swart won the long jump at 19-6, while Michael Swart won the 1,500-meter run in 4:21.07, beating his previous best this season by 11 seconds. He beat Imbler's John Bartell by less than a second, but Bartell still qualified for state.

Michael Swart also won the 800-meter run, while his teammate Austin Himes won the 3,000-meter run.

Joseph's Kyle Clough qualified for state in the 3,000 by finishing second.

Joseph's Mike Marks won the discus, while Elgin's Vance Horn came in second. Both will go to state. Horn will also go to state in the pole vault. He came in third, but hit the state qualifying standard of 12-7.

Elgin's Josh Hamill came in second in both the high jump and the triple jump. Joseph's Cole Lathrop, who has the highest high jump at the 2A level this season, finished fourth at district, but he will still go to state because his jump of 6-1 in Nyssa was good enough to qualify.

Union's Derek Kirby finished second in the shot put and thus qualified for state.

The Joseph 4 x 400 team (Randall Eschler, Corey Otten, Tristan Patton and Lathrop) won, while the Eagles' 4 x 100 team (Eschler, Otten, Patton and Eric Butterfield) qualified for state by coming in second.

The Imbler boys' 4 x 400 team (Colin Culbreth, Troy Hoskins, Ethan Davis and Bartell) finished second and will go to state.

Joseph's Patton won the 400-meter run, while Enterprise's Jason Douglas won the 110-meter hurdles, in a bit of a surprise, beating out Lathrop and Union's Ben Williamson. Imbler's Hoskins qualified for state in the high hurdles by finishing second.

Joseph's Otten won the 200-meter dash and Imbler's Culbreth won the 300-meter hurdles.

Eric Butterfield was second in the pole vault.
