For the second straight year, Powder Valley High School was named as the "1A All Sports Champion" for the 2001-02 school year.

"We think it's pretty neat," said Powder Valley Superintendent Kerri Smith.

The award is separate from the Oregonian Cup and is based strictly on how well teams do in state tournaments. The award is co-sponsored by the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association and The Oregonian sports department.

During 2001-02, the Powder Valley football team made it to the state semifinals, while the volleyball team was second in the 1A state tournament.

The girls basketball team finished third at state, while the girls track team was first and the boys track team took third.

Based on how the Powder Valley teams did in 2002-03, Powder Valley might have a legitimate shot at winning the award three years in a row.

Again, the Powder Valley football team went to the state semifinals in 2002. The volleyball team finished fourth, while the girls track team was second and the boys track team took fifth at state.
