MILTON-FREEWATER — The Union County Junior softball all-star girls finished second in the District 3 Tournament Thursday.

"The kids did a great job," said Manager Mark Stratton. "We beat everybody but Baker. Everybody did a fantastic job."

Baker beat Union County 12-2. If Union County had won that game, the girls would have played Baker again Thursday night for the tournament championship.

Union County beat La Grande, Milton-Freewater and Athena to make it to the Baker game. Baker went through the tournament undefeated.

Stratton said the entire team played well. The roster of the second-place juniors was Katie Griffin, Miranda Griffin, Lacey Moore, Tara Witherspoon, Sarah Witherspoon, Megan Myers, Carrie Stratton, Christina McGilvray, Savannah Wilhelm, Nichole Crow, Jennifer Brotherton and Whitney Carman.

The Wallowa Valley Major all-star girls are the only local team left playing in tournaments west of the mountains.

The undefeated Wallowa girls will play for the District 3 championship at 1 p.m. today against Pendleton.

Wallowa beat Pendleton earlier in the week, but it wasn't easy, as the girls squeaked it out in a 15-14 barnburner.

Even if Wallowa loses today, the girls will get another shot at Pendleton and the championship because they would only have one tournament loss. That second game, if it is necessary, would be played Saturday.
