UNION The junior golfers working the Buffalo Peak Golf Course had a slight advantage Friday when it came to making their way up the mountain to the first hole.

Actually, we didnt have to walk. We got shuttled up there, said Brianna Gilmour, who will be a freshman at Canby High School this fall.

The forty-one golfers walked the rest of the way, however, and Gilmour and playing partner Molly Edmunds of Portland came away impressed.

Its nice, but its challenging, Edmunds said.

Both golfers led their divisions at the tournament, the first of its kind at Buffalo Peak. Edmunds was the only girl in the junior class (15-17-year-olds) but she still shot an 85, including a 40 on the back nine. Gilmour had a 46 on the front nine on her way to an even 100 in the intermediate girls (12-14) class.

Two La Grande golfers qualified for the State Junior Championship with their performances at Buffalo Peak and at a similar tournament Thursday at Wildhorse Golf Course in Mission. Todd McAndie won the 14-15 boys division at both events, shooting a 73 in Union and a 77 at Mission. Tyler Tucker was second both times, with a 77 in Union and an 83 in Mission.

The State Junior Championship is July 9-13 at the Tualatin Country Club.

Other winners included Ryan Gilmor, who had a 73 to win the junior boys (16-17); Tyler Hendershot, who had a 90 in the intermediate boys (12-13); and Isaiah Telles, who led the nine-hole peewee boys and girls division with a 39.
