The two-time state defending champion Union cross country girls are the favorites to win their third straight state title, according to a poll released Tuesday of cross country coaches from around the state.

The Union girls team was ranked No. 1 by cross country coaches in the first 1A/2A poll of the season. The Bobcat girls, who returned most of their runners from their state champion team last year, just edged out Myrtle Point in the poll.

The Enterprise cross country boys were ranked No. 6 in the new poll. The La Grande cross country boys moved up a notch to No. 5 in the latest 3A poll.

The undefeated La Grande volleyball girls (17-0) remained at No. 2 in the 3A poll, with three first-place votes. La Grande and Estacada are dominating the poll. It is possible La Grande may get a chance to play Estacada at a tournament of elite teams in Eugene Oct. 18.

Burns, whom the La Grande girls have beaten, was ranked No. 3.
