AS GOOD AS IT GETS: BAKER-LA GRANDE; COVE-POWDER VALLEY

October 09, 2003 11:00 pm

Some major showdowns will take place in La Grande this weekend as the prep fall sports season heads into the final stretch.

The action will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the middle school when the La Grande soccer boys face off with Madras in a battle for first place.

La Grande is 4-1-1 in District 7, tied for first with Mac-Hi with 13 points. Madras, which has played one less game, is at 4-1-0, and has 12 points. The Tigers' only loss this year was on the road to the White Buffaloes.

La Grande still has another match with Mac-Hi, and Mac-Hi and Madras must still play each other one more time, but the Tigers can give themselves a solid inside track with a win Friday.

The boys' game will be followed by the La Grande girls versus Madras. The Tiger girls, undefeated in league, are headed for another District 7 crown.

Also at 2 p.m. is the big confrontation everyone in Cove and Powder Valley has been waiting for. The Leopards and Badgers, both with high-powered offenses and both undefeated in Old Oregon League play, will meet on the gridiron in Cove to decide the OOL title.

Meanwhile, the Cove and Powder Valley volleyball girls will play at about 4 p.m. Friday in Cove in an important OOL match.

The La Grande football boys will host their Greater Oregon League rival Baker at 7 p.m. Friday. La Grande (1-1 in GOL) nearly beat the Bulldogs last year on the road, and Tigers coach Shea Little used to coach the Bulldogs, so this should be a quite a battle.

In other football action, Enterprise will host Imbler at 7:30 p.m., and Elgin and Union, both improved clubs, will look for their first Wapiti League win in Union, at 7:30 p.m.
