NORTH POWDER — The No.1-ranked Powder Valley Badgers scored 52 points in the first quarter en route to their 86-28 playoff romp over Prairie City Friday.

"We emphasized not having a slow start this week," Powder Valley coach Alan Stanfield said.

On the first play of the game, Powder Valley's Todd Baxter scampered 51 yards into the end zone.

Prairie City and Powder Valley exchanged turnovers, then the Panthers turned the ball over again on downs. That led to Baxter's second rushing TD, this one from 38 yards out.

Powder Valley's Arden Perkins sacked the Panther quarterback for a 10-yard loss on third down. The Panthers punted the ball back to the Badgers.

Cody Taylor's 15-yard rushing TD made the score 24-0 with 6:47 left in the first quarter.

Powder Valley's Justin Deal intercepted a pass on the next drive, which set up Baxter's 38-yard TD pass to Taylor.

Deal returned his second interception of the game for a 28-yard TD.

"It's always good to get a defensive score," Stanfield said.

Taylor capped off the first quarter with a 7-yard TD run with nine seconds remaining to give Powder Valley 52 points.

After being shut out in the first quarter, the Panthers scored two touchdowns toward the end of the half. The Badgers led 66-14 at halftime.

Powder Valley's Jake Weems made a leaping 12-yard TD catch from Justus Gray in the fourth quarter. Stanfield said Gray and Weems played well in the second half.

Weems finished the game with two catches for 22 yards. Gray was 4-for-6 passing with no interceptions for 62 yards.

The Badgers had 495 yards of total offense. Kevin Hopson led the Badgers with six tackles, including one for an 8-yard loss. Aurelio Ochoa, Zac Whitford, Perkins and Jacob Brown all had five tackles.

The Badgers (9-0 overall) have a bye next week. They will host Jewell in a quarterfinal game in two weeks.
