The top cross-country teams in Oregon converged at Lane Community College Saturday for the annual Cross Country State Championships in Eugene.

The Union girls' third consecutive state crown highlighted the day's events. The meet was also marked by gutsy performances by runners from La Grande, Enterprise, Wallowa and Elgin.

Among top individual finishers were Wallowa's Hayley Oveson and Enterprise's Krista Stangel who placed second and third in 1A/2A competition. La Grande's Kirsten Johnson was the eighth 3A girl to cross the finish line and Michael Swart of Enterprise turned a performance that landed him a 10th place finish in 1A/2A action.

Teams finishing in the upper echelon were: Enterprise boys, 2nd; Enterprise girls, 4th; and La Grande boys, 6th.
