The Eastern Oregon women ran away from the Cascade Thunderbirds 92-60 in their non-conference basketball season opener Saturday.

"Our press created easy baskets and we went from there," Eastern coach Anji Weissenfluh said.

The Mountaineers had 17 steals and forced the Thunderbirds into 33 turnovers.

All the Mountaineers on the roster played and scored, and six different Eastern women scored eight or more points. The Mountaineers shot 37-for-66 (56.1 percent) from the floor.

"It was a good game to start with," Weissenfluh said.

Eastern got off to a roaring start. After Michelle Kinley hit back-to-back jumpers midway through the half and Jamie Jo Cant added a bucket, the Mountaineers held a commanding 28-4 lead.

Kinley came off the bench to lead the Mountaineers with 23 points. She also had seven rebounds, four steals and three assists in 22 minutes.

The Thunderbirds shot 22.2 percent in the first half, then picked up their shooting in the second half with 43.3 percent.

Weissenfluh said she was disappointed that the Thunderbirds had too many second chance opportunities.

The Thunderbirds had 16 offensive rebounds to the Mountaineers' 13.

Cant hit three three-pointers and scored 13 points. Sarah Smith scored 11.

Sarah Smith and Sandy Isbell had six rebounds each. Tricia Haddock had six assists and four steals.

The Mountaineers (1-0) travel to Atherton, Calif., for the Menlo College Holiday Classic Friday and Saturday.

They will take on UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs Friday and finish with Menlo College Saturday.
