ATHERTON, Calif. — The Eastern Oregon basketball women roared back from a 12-point halftime deficit to score 65 second-half points en route to a 93-78 win over UC-Santa Cruz Friday night.

Eastern only scored 28 points in the first half of its opening game at the Menlo College Tournament. But, the Mountaineers shot 7-for-11 from three-point range in the second half and shot 54 percent (20-for -37) in the final 20 minutes to win going away.

Eastern (2-0) didn't have particularly good overall shooting or rebounding statistics for the game, but two stats did stand out as the Mountaineers dominated on defense and ball control.

Eastern made 16 steals to UC-Santa Cruz's five, and the Mountaineers had just eight turnovers compared to the Banana Slugs' 28.

Eastern scored 33 points off those turnovers. Due to UC-Santa Cruz's many lost possessions, the Mountaineers also took 21 more shots (74 to 53) than the Banana Slugs.

UC-Santa Cruz (2-1) came in to this contest undefeated.

Tricia Haddock had a great all-around game despite fouling out, leading the team in points, assists and rebounds. She scored 19 points, had eight assists and six rebounds. She also made four steals.

Cory Nelson scored 16 points and had five steals, while Jamie Jo Cant shot three-for-five from three-point range and scored 14, while also making three steals.

Christy Smith shot 7-for-12 and had 14 points while Michelle Kinley came off the bench to shoot 8-for-9 from the free throw line. She also ended up with 14 points.

Eastern will look to keep its record perfect today with a 5 p.m. game against Menlo College.
