Two lanes of eastbound Interstate 84 opened just before 9 a.m. as state police and Union County Sheriffs deputies continued working on what could be a crime scene.

Travelers on the interstate began calling officers and the state highway department at about 5:14 a.m. today reporting a burning vehicle, according to the highway department, .

The fire closed down the two eastbound lanes soon after.

A HazMat team from the La Grande Fire Department was called to the car fire when a container was seen leaking a suspicious substance.

Suspicions about the use of the vehicle resulted in law enforcement officers from the La Grande State Police office, the Baker City State Police office and the Union County Sheriffs Office working the scene.

The interstate was closed near the Highway 203 interchange south of La Grande, with traffic diverted toward Union.

No other information was available at press time.
