School board sets priorities

January 20, 2008 11:00 pm

Members of the La Grande School Board are elected to represent the community as a whole. It seems prudent that a summary of our activities (since last June) be presented every so often.

A lot of hard work goes into the making of a successful school district, and even though we struggle each month with an abundance of needs and a dearth of funds, the board is excited about the future. Many wonderful things are happening in our district.

Our goals, as stated below, drive and shape our desire to prepare our district for the 21st century with strong fiscal management, uniquely designed facilities tailored to provide the best learning environment for our students, and support for innovative curriculum development and teaching that will continue to help each of our students gain the tools to succeed.

La Grande School Board

Goals for 2007-2008

A. Funding for facilities

B. Communication

C. Energy services consultant

D. Improve student achievement

E. Analyze staffing needs

Since last June, in working sessions, special sessions and regular board meetings, we have dealt with issues surrounding the "open" campus at the high school, the Senate Bill 1036 Excise Tax, Inter-district transfers, curriculum alignment, facilities needs, policy updates, energy efficiency audits, a new superintendent search, a growing student population, contracts with both classified and certified staff, and numerous other items. We have listened to public comment on many of these issues and have also received numerous letters. If further details on any of these topics are of interest, please contact a school board member or the superintendent.

In November, the board met with the La Grande City Council, something we would like to do at least once a year, and attended the state convention for Oregon school board members.

In the coming months, in addition to the monthly work of the board, we will be searching for a new school superintendent, looking at funding possibilities for remodeling and updating our facilities, and getting the thousands of pages of policies for our district up to date to reflect local input and new state and federal regulations.

Like most volunteer boards we are very busy and often don't have a chance to answer every phone call, but please do not hesitate to call us or write a letter and offer your opinion on anything regarding the school district. Your ideas and guidance are invaluable.
