Auction bids help kids Attend Saturday’s Junior Market Auction

If you missed your chance at the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show to put quality meat in your freezer, here is the last opportunity for the year.

We are gearing up for the Union County Fair this week and once again the youth of our community get the opportunity to bring their 4-H and FFA market animals to a show, have them judged and then sell at the auction on Saturday. We have 110 market animals coming to fair including goats, hogs, lambs, steers and rabbits.

Many of the exhibitors have had possession of their animals for 60 days or longer and all have put many hours of work into their projects. They are responsible for purchasing the animal from a breeder, feeding and watering it morning and night, training it to show and grooming it to look great at the Union County Fair.

Now is the time for the community to come out and support these kids who have shown they can be responsible and learn from an FFA or 4-H project. There are several ways you can do this. First and foremost, we would like people to come to the auction with the intent to purchase an animal and have it custom cut and wrapped to put in the freezer.

Average prices at the Eastern Oregon Livestock show were:

    Beef: $1.40 per pound

    Lamb and goat: $3 per pound

    Hog: $2.20 per pound

If auction prices are close to what we had at the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show, and after cut and wrap costs, you could put meat in your freezer for the following average costs:

    Beef: $4 per pound

    Lamb and goat: $9.75 per pound

    Pork: $6.30 per pound

 These prices are right at or maybe a little higher than prices for the same meat at the grocery store. But think about the social benefit — at those auction prices you are giving the exhibitor enough money to cover their costs of purchasing an animal and feeding it, and adding a little extra to put in the bank. Many of these kids use the extra money to fund future projects or save for college.

The auction starts at 5 p.m. Saturday. We will have a buyer’s pit barbecue starting at 4 p.m. You can gain entrance to the pit barbecue by picking up a bidder number in the barn office. The FFA advisers will be providing the meat for the barbeque. For those of you who have not been lucky enough to sample their pit barbecue, you have missed out. Don’t miss out again! Come to the auction, support the kids and have fun at the fair.
