Important event

To the Editor:

With tears in my eyes, I watched 24-year-old Shane Smith walk down the aisle Sept. 10 as the best man at Nate Wright’s wedding.

July 2, Nate invited Shane to his family’s cabin in the Elkhorns. They ran from the shore and dove into the pond near the cabin. Shane’s head struck a rock and his fifth vertebrae was shattered.

The staff at St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise was sure he would be paralyzed from the chest down for life. Twenty-one steps showed his courage and determination the first time he used a walker.

Shane’s mother, Tami, married Steve LaPrelle in California when Shane was 18 months old. Challenges began for Shane when a month later, his biological father was killed.

Shane is very close to his grandparents, Jim and Bettie Rector, and they and his parents are asking for your help and generosaity.

On Sept. 24 at Riveria Activity Center, there is a spaghetti fundraiser beginning at 2 p.m. with a live and silent auction to go toward his massive medical and living expenses. Please join them or stop by and give a donation to this incredible young man. Tickets will be sold at the door.

Those who can’t make it to the fundraiser may make donations at Community Bank.

Housing opportunity

To the Editor:

I would like to encourage our community to help spread the word: Habitat for Humanity is building a new home for someone in a lower income bracket.

If you know someone that is in need of adequate housing, please let them know this opportunity is back and the house will be built here in La Grande. Applications and guidelines are being distributed from the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store during store hours. Many people in our community qualify for this opportunity and I would like to challenge you to help people know where to find it.

Not everyone has access to the newspaper, so let’s make word-of-mouth be positive today and help make somebody’s dreams come true! You can become a volunteer for this project also if your heart leads you to this service, contact Cindy at the Re-store 541-663-9515 and she will add you and your abilities to the volunteer list.

Thank you for giving a few minutes to help create a lifetime of memories!
