Respect military

To the Editor:

I experienced a real flashback on reading the recent community comment by Ron Brand.

It was not a flashback to my combat experiences in Vietnam but certainly to the time period. Mr. Brand’s comments were the same rantings of the radical left that filled the pages of the Berkeley campus newspaper in the ’60s. While the majority of his writings deserve no response at all, his denigration of the men and women serving in uniform does.

I suggest that he attend a National Guard weekend drill of our fine, brave and patriotic citizen soldiers who live and work here in Union County and have been deployed to Iraq and Afganistan. Unfortunately, not all of them made it back. I believe they would take serious exception to his “jackbooted stormtrooper” remark.

As a retired Navy man and combat veteran, I certainly do.

Grange hosts fun event

To the Editor:

The Fort Union Grange folks hosted the Blue Mountain Old Time Fiddlers Show on Sept. 16. This annual event of food and music is a fun evening for both the musicians and the spectators alike.

Many granges have faded into the sunset, but Fort Union Grange still serves as a community resource. We appreciate the folks who keep this facility available for community entertainment.

We all look forward to next year’s fiddle show.
