Great year in La Grande

The Christmas season in La Grande is a special time. The new downtown decorations, combined with the many businesses that have festive windows, make for a wonderful local shopping experience.

Our local businesses are our strength and, by “keeping it local,” we are all helping our community.

I would like to highlight some of the fantastic efforts by citizens and organizations during 2011.

After the tragic loss of the Riverside Park Pavilion in February, the local chapter of Soroptimist International went to work and organized a strong fund-raising effort to help with the rebuilding of the grand and historic pavilion.

Their hard work has resulted in nearly $25,000 in donations for the kitchen and furnishings of the pavilion.

Individuals, graduated classes of La Grande High School, and many local businesses showed great community spirit by making substantial donations. Thank you to the Soroptimists and every one who has helped the rebuilding process.

The rebuilding is coming along nicely and we will all be able to celebrate the re-opening soon.

The Main Street Committee of the city has worked tirelessly to promote and improve historic downtown La Grande.

Their efforts in four key areas will mean a strong and vibrant La Grande.

Projects like the Liberty Theater, various downtown events and the support of the “Big H” improvement project are on task and much work is ongoing.

The Union County Timber Cruisers Car Club has built the annual car show that is held during Crazy Days into a major event. This coming summer, the car club will be the organizers of Crazy Days, which should be a great time in downtown La Grande.

The employees of the city of La Grande have again done a commendable job in keeping us safe, providing quality care for parks and the city infrastructure, and doing all the other services that we all come to expect as citizens.

They all made sacrifices in regards to compensation and their actions meant the retention of current service levels.

Our citizens continue to be the backbone of the city. With confidence you elected us and we try to do the best we can for you.

On behalf of the city staff and the La Grande City Council, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
