Volunteers needed

To the Editor:

People of all ages are invited to the 2012 Volunteer Link from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at La Grande Middle School. If you’re looking for a place to volunteer, Volunteer Link is the place to be.

Volunteer support is vital to many organizations in Union County. The annual event is a great way for people to learn more about volunteer opportunities available.

More than 30 organizations will be “on display” in the middle school commons.

The Drug Free Relay is a volunteer-led event and one of the groups that will be present.

The annual fundraising event supports safe, drug-free communities. Teams or individuals walk or run laps for 12 hours around the La Grande High School track. Funds raised pay costs of the relay and are awarded as grants that support substance abuse prevention programs. Proceeds also fund a scholarship for a local high school senior who has been active in supporting the relay, their school and community.

This year will mark the 15th anniversary of the relay — quite an accomplishment for our community. The relay is supported entirely by volunteer efforts and community donations.

Get involved! Become a sponsor; tell your friends; write a letter to the editor; attend the event; procure donations; count laps; join the committee; be a team captain; make phone calls; and walk with a team.

The success of the Drug Free Relay, like so many other programs in Union County, depends upon the efforts of people from all walks of life who have time to give to their community. Come down to Volunteer Link to find out what kind of volunteer opportunities are waiting for you.
