Ladd Marsh fee set-back

To the Editor:

Your editorial on Jan. 11 noting the imposition of a parking permit for Ladd Marsh use reflects the dismay of so many of us in our community who enjoy the occasional walk in the serene wildlife environment.

This, like the plethora of fees you mentioned, heightens our suspicion of government agencies that nickel and dime us to increase their revenue.

The marsh is such a beautiful entry into our valley, but the message is clear that visitors should not stop and park to savor the fresh air and walk through the cat-tails for a closer look at wildlife; it will cost $7.

With our traveling attitude increasingly soured by fees, we become more reluctant to stop for a visit in the towns along the way, or the historic sites advertised with the big brown signs. Beware of the fees.

Recently, while traveling in a Midwest state, I was impressed with fee-less state parks, scenic views, day-picnic and visitor sites.

Rather than the typical fee post were positive signs: “Enjoy the view” or “Welcome to our state” or “Help us preserve the beauty.”

The imposition of additional fees is another set-back in our local and Oregon efforts to promote tourism and extend a welcoming hand to guests.
